When I worked with Tara and her mom to develop a wedding day schedule, they made time for this father daughter first look. It took place in the bridal room at Our Lady of Grace in Greensboro, and hands down it was one of the most emotional moments of 2017.
I can still remember her dad turning around and catching her breath and the quiet sounds of Tara’s sisters crying a little bit. There was not a single dry eye in that room, including mine. I had to work hard to keep it all together behind my camera.
Every wedding season, there’s moments I go back to over and over again and for any reason. Remembering the good moments keep my spirit going, they help me refocus on what’s important when the news is full of who said what, and who’s finger is most itching to press some buttons.
In some ways, marriage and weddings and fathers and daughters prove that love still wins the day. We need weddings to bring us together and remind us that marriage is about more than us, and that fathers and daughters are evidence that love is serious business- they’re the stuff that proves that marriage is important.
The moment a dad sees his daughter on her wedding day, ready to walk down the aisle is probably one of those moments where it all come full circle to him. I could be talking out my ear, since I’m not a dad, but when my daughter passes a milestone, my husband remarks that all these memories will be flipping through his mind on her wedding day.
Whether or not your a mom or dad, you parent for these milestone moments. They’re for both of you to catalog and remember forever.
“Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters too.”
