I really love being a second shooter as well as a primary shooter. Every wedding season that rolls around, I try to make sure I’m seconding at least 6-10 weddings for another photographer. It allows me to enjoy shooting, learn new techniques and client relation strategies and most importantly to me, to get out of the house and get to know other awesome photographers. Some of my most valued relationships in the wedding industry and even in my personal life started because I seconded for other photographers. It’s an experience I value and hope to always maintain in my business.
How I work as a second shooter
I view my job as a second shooter in a simple way: I’m there to help you and make sure that you get the images you want and need. I don’t view seconding as a portfolio building activity. I go where you tell me, shoot each wedding as if it were my own, and treat your couples as if they were my couples. I prefer to shoot on your cards, and I rarely ask for images. If I do, it’s 5-10 specific images of the day, to put in my portfolio or to update this page. I happily sign contracts, and do my best to make your studio look great. I’d expect no less from any of my seconds, and I give the best of me as your second.
What’s in my bag
I shoot with 2 canon 6d’s, a canon 35mm 1.4, a canon 85 1.8, 3 flashes, some triggers, a staggering amount of memory cards if you don’t need me to shoot on yours, and extra batteries of all kinds. In the summer I have my summer survival kit with me in my bag which includes water, bug spray, sun screen, deodorant, a change of clothes, and first aid supplies.
What I’m paid as a second shooter
For weddings where I’m contracted to second shoot for less than 6 hours, I charge $50 per hour. For contracts longer than 6 hours, I’m paid $40 an hour. For studios that prefer a flat rate, I charge 350 for 8 hours or more, and 300 for less than 8 hours. While I prefer to be paid by check, I’m also happy to invoice you. Please note that I do not accept pay pal for payments.
Traveling to be a second shooter
Traveling more than 100 miles for weddings is becoming more common for me, and I’m happy to have the opportunity to work with photographers in other states and countries. Please contact me for more info regarding how I’ve handled traveling to second shoot in the past.
